New England Patriot Lonie Paxton, Disabled Friend Find Common Ground With Life Fitness Equipment

SCHILLER PARK, Ill., Dec. 19, 2006 – When Brook Duquesnel, 29, a childhood friend of three-time Super Bowl Champion Lonie Paxton of the New England Patriots was paralyzed from the waist down after a snowboarding injury in 1998, he didn’t let his injuries keep him down. Today, Duquesnel stays fit from his wheelchair and works out alongside Paxton on equipment from leading global fitness manufacturer, Life Fitness.

After his accident, Duquesnel stayed sharp with competitive four-wheel downhill mountain biking, but was disappointed in the quality and availability of equipment for disabled athletes. The duo discovered that Life Fitness’ Cable Motion Dual Adjustable Pulley system was a perfect fit for Duquesnel because the machine is so easy to use from a wheelchair.

“It’s great to find a machine that both Lonie and I can use after making only slight adjustments,” Duquesnel said. “Four-wheel downhill mountain biking isn’t easy but neither is winning the Super Bowl. Our workouts on the Life Fitness Dual Adjustable Pulley system make sure I’m prepared to perform my best.” Life Fitness’ Cable Motion machines let users define their own paths of motion and allow for an endless variety of exercises that build balance, stability and power. The machines feature low starting resistances and easy adjustments so they’re appropriate for a variety of users, regardless of their fitness goals or skills.

“Our Cable Motion machines give users the ideal training tools to add more strength to their everyday, real-life activities, which can vary dramatically for someone with a disability,” said Greg Highsmith, vice president of fitness education and strength product management, Life Fitness. “Brook and Lonie are perfect examples of how this product can meet the fitness needs of any user.”

Because of Duquesnel’s early frustrations with finding fitness equipment for disabled athletes, he and Paxton decided to tackle the issue by founding the Active Force Foundation (AFF), a non-profit organization dedicated to finding adaptive sports equipment for individuals with physical handicaps. AFF’s goal is to design and engineer high quality sports equipment, which will allow people with disabilities to experience a healthier and more active way of living.
